Our donkeys are more than just hiking companions – they are part of our family. Each one has been adopted, because for us breeding is not an option. Some of them once lacked attention, others had owners who could no longer keep them. With us, they have found a safe, loving, and permanent home.

Their wellbeing always comes first. Of course, they walk with us on the trails, but we make sure they get the very best in return: regular health care, good food, lots of love – and after every hike, a well-deserved break. When they’re not hiking, they enjoy open space to wander, play, and live out their rich social donkey lives.

Most importantly: our donkeys stay with us forever. We don’t sell or trade them – they are here to be loved, cared for, and respected as the wonderful companions they are.

Facts About Donkeys

• Ancient Companions: Donkeys are among the oldest working animals in human history. They have served as pack and draft animals for over 5,000 years. With the rise of machinery and tractors, their traditional roles declined – but today they find new meaning as therapy animals, hiking companions, and gentle friends.

• Origins: Donkeys originally came from the dry, mountainous regions of Africa, where they often traveled up to 17 km per day in search of food and water. While wild populations still exist, they are now endangered.

• Diversity: Worldwide there are around 180 donkey breeds, though many are simply regional variations. In Spain alone, seven breeds are officially recognized, including the Catalan, Poitou, and Andalusian donkey. Donkeys vary in size from miniature (about 1 m tall) to large breeds (up to 1.60 m). Their coats can be white, gray, brown, black, or spotted. A typical feature is the dark stripe along their back and the shoulder cross (St. Andrew’s cross).

• Social Nature: Donkeys are highly social and should never be kept alone. Unlike horses, they don’t have strict hierarchies but live peacefully in family groups.

• Intelligence & “Stubbornness”: Donkeys are often unfairly called stubborn. In reality, they are intelligent, independent thinkers. In dangerous situations they pause, assess, and only then react – a survival instinct from their mountainous origins. So if a donkey stops, there is always a reason!

• Gentle Companions: Spending time with a donkey invites you to slow down, be patient, and enjoy the moment. Their calm presence, soulful eyes, and fluffy coats make them unforgettable companions who bring joy, peace, and laughter.
