Free hiking, autonomous routes
Our experienced donkeys will accompany you on your journey.
Apart from guided and organized activities, we offer the possibility of renting donkeys for self guided trails.

What to know?
To rent a donkey you do not need to be a professional porter, but it is important to know certain aspects of the care and handling of these animals.
That is why we offer a short introductory course to better understand the donkey and to be able to enjoy the excursion together. We also offer advice on route planning and we will be available to advise you throughout the journey.
Organize your route
- Find out about the availability of donkeys and make a pre-booking by email; info@burrotrek.com (or tel. 0034 633576272). Inform us about the route you want to do, the dates and how many donkeys you want to bring.
- Book the accommodations.
- After booking the accommodations, make the definitive reservation of the donkeys through the reservation form. Inform us where and how long you will stay (in order to provide and organize the feeding of the donkeys). 30% of the rental must be paid with the reservation. Frequently asked questions
How many animals is recommended to bring?
Donkeys are very social animals and generally much happier when they are not alone. When walking together, they tend to be more motivated, cooperative, and relaxed than when they walk alone. It’s a common misconception that two donkeys are harder to handle—in fact, the opposite is often true.
Luggage and Number of Donkeys
On average, one donkey can carry about 30 kg of luggage. Based on this, we recommend the following:
-
Hikes with tent overnight stays: at least 1 donkey per 2 people
-
Hikes with accommodation stays: at least 1 donkey per 2–3 people
Donkeys are also more motivated when they are not carrying their full load capacity, which contributes to their wellbeing.
Our Recommendation
In general, we recommend taking at least two donkeys, both for practical reasons and for the animals’ social needs. Exceptions are possible—for example, for solo travelers or families with very young children who may need assistance while walking.
-
What is the maximum luggage one can carry?
Donkeys can carry a maximum of about one-fifth of their body weight. Therefore, the carrying capacity depends on the size of the donkey. For our donkeys, this ranges between 15 and 40 kg. On average, you can calculate with about 30 kg per donkey.
What is the recommended minimum age to participate in the activities or routes?
There is no minimum or maximum age for participating in the activities and tours. For children under 3 years old, we recommend bringing a baby carrier or backpack carrier.
Can I bring my dog on a trail?
In general, yes. However, donkeys are not always dog-friendly, so dogs should be well-behaved and friendly. Unfortunately, dogs are sometimes not allowed in certain accommodations. Therefore, the easiest option is to choose a tour with camping or a combination of camping and accommodation. We are happy to accommodate these requests and help you plan accordingly.
